Homework
What are our aims at FGCS for homework?
Although the government has not set a statutory framework for assignments (including homework), Forest Gate Community School recognises the need for assignments as evidenced in research by the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF). The EEF states that on average, the impact of assignments on learning is consistently positive, leading to on average five months' additional progress. At FGCS we believe that homework, when set appropriately, can deepen student’s understanding of their learning by providing opportunities for rehearsal outside the classroom to consolidate what has been covered. We assess homework in lessons by providing low-stakes quizzes and using these, our staff are able to address any gaps in learning.
Why is homework important to all stakeholders at FGCS?
● For students: to extend and reinforce explicitly outlined key learning objectives so that the student develops self-regulation and progress in their learning
● For staff: to consolidate and extend learning in class so that all students make expected or more than expected progress
● For parents/carers: to involve parents in the learning process and improve home-school communication through DPR.
How is homework set?
Teachers will set and track assignments (or homework) through the DPR. In this way, students will be able to see an explicit link between their assignments with their key learning objectives. Parents and carers are able to view the homework set and view feedback for completed homework by logging onto the DPR portal using their child’s login details.

What is Mathwatch and why is it used at KS3 Maths?
MathsWatch is a valuable tool for assigning homework due to its comprehensive and engaging approach to mathematics education. It allows us to:
● Offer interactive video tutorials that explain concepts clearly and visually, which can enhance students' understanding compared to traditional textbook methods.
● Cover a broad spectrum of mathematical topics, ensuring that students can find resources relevant to their current curriculum and areas where they need improvement.
● Provide students with immediate feedback on their answers, allowing them to learn from their mistakes in real time and understand where they went wrong.
● Monitor progress through detailed reports, helping to identify strengths and weaknesses. This data-driven approach allows for targeted intervention and support.
● Provide resources for different ability levels, enabling personalised learning experiences that cater to individual student needs.
